happy solstice

my blogging voice has been hibernating! each day i think i'll post, but nope, no words... tomorrow's the solstice though, so i've marched it outside to say (at the very least) 'happy solstice'. i send you wishes for a magic filled day... yes, i know that the calendar says that it's the first day of winter, but anyone with an ear to the ground knows that life begins to stir after the winter solstice; little by little everything starts to wake up... and then suddenly it's spring and the results of this awakening are visible everywhere. tomorrow, on the shortest day of the year, i honor the quiet and marvel at the awakening that will follow...

thank you to all who commented on the lotus post ~ how sweet it was to read your comments while i was away! seriously cynjon, i never thought about that when i was painting 'a bone and a lotus'. ; )

my time away was refreshing... so much change is in the air and i feel happy to be in the Flow of it all. i took this pic of mt. shasta as i was leaving home -- i simply cannot resist photographing this mountain that puts a smile on my face every time it springs into view. the only reason i didn't take pics of it on my way home was that the road was snowy and icy, and sensible lynne insisted that i really, truly be Sensible about the whole picture taking while driving thing.

i've only done a little art since i've been back... finished the lotus above and this small painting. i think i'm suffering from a bad case of art ADD. there are so many things i'm wanting to try now. i picked up some paper clay while i was out. judy wise's paper clay doll has me itching to try it. and i'm knotting a long citrine and pink chalcedony necklace. and, and, and...

i'd like to say a big 'thank you' to sarah fishburn for sending me a free copy of pasticcio, issue 5. sarah had a drawing on her blog a while back, and i won -- thank you, sarah! if you've never purchased pasticcio before, be prepared for a treat. sarah and angela will surprise you with the breadth and depth of their knowledge about all things art and beyond. articles about mosaic (done with paper as well as more traditional materials), book reviews, beauty tips (uh huh), articles focusing on mixed media artists, links to helpful websites, and on and on.

one of the things i loved most was an article about the artist ione robinson (1910 - 1989). yup, these women will open your eyes to new artists and new ways of doing things. oh, and there's the art... pages and pages of art to feast your eyes on. you can purchase it here. thank you again, sarah...

i leave you with sweet lullaby by deep forest... have a beautiful solstice and a glorious, happy holiday season!

lotus love

lotuses from my journals of the last two and a half years...

they're in no particular order -- some are from my travel journal, some from my early gratitude journal, and the rest from daily journals. i started journaling and painting in the spring of 2006 -- at the time i was a full time glass bead maker who was tired out from making, photographing, and packaging up beads. painting seemed so restful - i lost myself in it. my experiences with bead making taught me a lot, not the least of which was that producing art is not my thing. with that in mind i've let painting have its own life, live at its own pace. it nourishes me as much today as it did in 2006... and i just started a new lotus yesterday!

if there is text on the page, i've put the source under the photo. and, in case you're interested in writing sanskrit words, i drew these using 'sacred sanskrit words', by leza lowitz and reema datta as a guide.

further

. . .

going to mt. shasta to hang the tree flags...

there is one road that goes up the mountain, and we're almost there.

taken at 7,000'... we got out of the car and walked about a mile and a half up from here.

wouldn't you like to live in this bird's home? it's more than 80' above the ground. and look at how round that hole is...

jacky's flag on the left, grrl's in the middle, and mine on the right. all on the same tree (click to see them better). i don't know who was happier, me or the trees. there wasn't a breeze stirring until they were all hung, then i could hardly take a picture they were blowing around so exuberantly. yeah, i was smiling...

wish you could've been there jacky and grrl...

looking at the top before we head down.

back in town...

setting sunlight...

thank you grrl, and jacky! thank you trees!

and finally, therese, the girl with the grass hair that i briefly introduced you to last week. she's a gardener... she said she's ms. le reux's gardener as a matter of fact! small world!!

desperately seeking susan, er... lori

lori, seth's done just about everything besides look into his crystal ball to try and find you... yes, it's true that he heard from you just last week, but he doesn't know your e-mail address so he can respond! there are many of us here in blog land that want to send you vintage stuff from our vintage stashes, so please, please send seth your e-mail address! we all thank you. : )

and now, it is my great pleasure

to accept this award from jeane at artit.

the award says:

"This blog invests and believes the proximity-nearness in space, time and relationships! These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of the prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers! Deliver this award to eight bloggers, who must choose eight more and include this cleverly written text into the body of their award."

thank you, jeane! i'm flattered to receive an award that calls my blog 'charming', and it's certainly true that i'm not interested in 'prizes or self-aggrandizement', which i can hardly spell! so i'm to choose eight, eh? oh my, there are so many... how about four that are near and dear to my heart; four soulful and very charming blogs...

seth at the altered page
roxanne at river garden studio
dneese at grrl + dog
annette at fairy shoes and other things

thank you all for sharing your lives and your art with us!

and now, onto something that i very much want to share... if you've been to karin bartimole's blog beyond words, you probably feel as i do, that her art is beyond words. i highly recommend a visit to her blog -- it's like taking a dip in a cool, clear pool.

it was on her blog that i saw this video, and with her permission i've put it here. i loved it, to say the least... if you don't feel you have time to watch the whole thing, go to 5:30 and listen to what she learned from a teacher about judging her paintings. yes!!

this is what the collage in tuesday's post looks like now. maybe done...

the weather's nice and mt. shasta is calling. tree flags must be hung and the mountain communed with one last time before the snow gets deep. i'll report back soon...

peeking in

venus, jupiter, and the crescent moon as i pulled into the post office on sunday night. jupiter! the next time they'll be this close (and visible) is november, 2052. the moon and jupiter at the same time! it makes me giddy!

i'm resting and recuperating from my foray out into the world. as wonderful as my time away was, i'm happy to be back in my quiet life again. and painting! i didn't paint while i was gone. five days... i missed it a lot. i've just started this face. she has grass for hair...

and this collage... painting in progress and more messing about to come.

i only recently discovered that paint splatters make almost everything instantly better.

the model on the collage page came from the clothing catalog, toast. the paper is heavy, and the photography stunning. i highly recommend it... i read about it on a blog whose name i no longer remember, but i say thank you none-the-less!

oh that i could capture the wonder of these walnuts in a photo. they come out of the shell in one piece, and they're so fresh they're almost juicy... given to me by the friend i stayed with, and grown by her friend.

yes, just peeking in... can you see me smiling as i reread your comments on last week's post?

wishing you

many blessings...

. . .

i've been gluing and writing a lot, and swimming in books of an esoteric nature. and sleeping.

i put my old collages in a new, BIG book (just taped one on each page), and started some new ones. more ripping and less cutting will be involved. more painting and it looks like more writing. feeling the need to get down closer to the nitty gritty.

i'm leaving tomorrow to spend thanksgiving with friends... i'll be back early next week.

thank you for your visits and comments these last months... i am grateful...
