alberta ~ watercolors, gouache, casein paint, and oil pastels in fabriano journal

i was glad the page size was only 4" x 6", otherwise i'd have used my entire paint supply on alberta...

she's in a fabriano watercolor journal that kathy brought back to me from italy. the paper is nothing like the fabriano artistico paper that i've tried (and don't like). it's sort of like khadi paper except nicer, which is saying a lot because i adore khadi paper. a watercolorist would probably croak to know that i'm gobbing paint onto it!!

the binding is equally exquisite. no matter where you are in the book it lays absolutely flat.

the other side of alberta's page... deckle edges!

i've looked for them online and can't find them. if anyone knows where to buy them, let me know and i'll spread the word...

What is an artist? He's a man who has antennae, who knows how to hook up to the currents which are in the atmosphere, in the cosmos.

  7. Lynne, if you find out where to get another watercolour journal like this one LET ME KNOW!

Alberta shares her name with the Canadian province in from the Pacific Ocean. Her cheeks are the colour of the plant called Indian Paintbrush, her right eye the colour of Okanagan Lake in the winter, and lips are the colour of a deeply ripe cherry.

  10. ooo, laa laa, Alberta is getting her spring on for sure...think you must be ready to break out of the winter grays and into the light...the paper looks very textile and probably could handle anything...that's floating in the cosmos. parts of me love winter because you can see more clearly but a hint now and then of a little color does help review the happier side...but she still has adelia's one eye so i know she still remembering where she's coming from but with an eye out to the future. Really the book and paper is so "classically classic!" XOX ani...joy is in a box and on it's way should be there by monday (get the hinT)

  12. I don't see Alberta the way everyone else sees her, when I first scrolled down, I saw someone who was unhappy, someone emotionally bruised. I still do. Love Karen xx

  13. hi karen,

yeah, i can totally see that too... maybe expecting change, a moving on. as with most of my faces, there's a pensiveness and maybe even a sadness...

as i've said before, i don't really think about what emotions a face expresses - what matters is whether i feel like i've captured whatever it was that wanted to come through. if anything is communicated it's a language without words...

  14. Lynne, i so agree with what you just said. i hope that what i paint expresses what i feel.
i love those colors on Alberta, well, i love colors, can't help it! and the eyes, different ones, one wide-opened onto the world the other subdued, in the shadow, reflecting, more private. And thanks for the info on khadi papers....

  15. Lynne, thank you for commenting on my comment! Your faces often seem contradictory, eyes sad, mouth happy, a bit like real life, and the fact that you let whatever wants to come out come out, is like a little meditation. I always look forward to your blog. Karenxx

  17. karen,

Your faces often seem contradictory, eyes sad, mouth happy, a bit like a real life... hee!

i always feel like the eyes and mouth need to 'go together'. not necessarily match, but be somehow compatible. to me they seem like the "main ingredients". i've wondered if other face painters feel this way too...

  18. Sounds like I've put my foot in it again. Karen

  19. karen, no, not at all... it seems to me that there are many ways of seeing faces, and also ways of painting them. many people see things that i completely don't see. i was honestly wondering if other face painters also feel that the eyes and mouth have to be somehow harmonious - and i think they could be harmonious if one was, say, sad, and the other happy. i know that the eyes are usually very different (in the faces i paint). i often put my hand over one eye to see what the other looks like by itself, and usually each eye communicates a completely different feeling.

i'm not at all offended by what you wrote! this topic is so fascinating to me!

    xoxo

  20. Yes, I think the mouth should be harmonious with the eyes. If the mouth has a secret, it makes the eyes more interesting, and if the eyes look sad, the secret of the mouth would be enhanced. The relationship of them is endless.
Also I'm just beginning to think about how a person holds her head or shoulders, the chin tipped up or down. oh yeah, and eyebrows. There's a whole other subject!
    xx
