'tree girl' ~ casein paint, beeswax, watercolors and oil pastels on stillman and birn 'delta' paper

it's been a long time...  i've painted a lot since the november post.   i've tried to draw and paint every day, because it keeps me happy...

pencil and watercolors on 'delta' paper

but for sure there've been plenty of days when this was my motto.  when i painted and drew even when i couldn't think of anything to paint or draw.

i finished the landscape orientation book from the november post,

oil pastels, watercolors and pencil on 'delta' paper

started in a new pocket watercolor moleskine, and made a new book with stillman and birn's 'delta' paper.

i painted a lot of leaf girls.

'golden' high flow acrylics and pencil on 'delta' paper

here i was messing around with 'golden' high flow acrylics. i *like* them.

watercolors, gouache, colored pencil and pencil in pocket moleskine

i painted/drew a lot of this page while i was on the phone, on hold.   listening to muzak can make you go a little crazy.

i've thought about how much i love to draw small faces,

watercolors,  oil pastels, pencil and gouache in pocket moleskine

and bigger ones.

last summer i decided that i wanted to paint faces with watercolors only - no colored pencil or oil pastels.  i'm practicing and i feel like i'm making progress...

a few days ago i took danielle donaldson's e-course 'creative girl: the land of light and shadows', which is offered on jeanne oliver's ning group. for two days most of jeanne's classes were half price; i took danielle's class and signed up for kathie vezzanie's 'plaster and wax 101' for $34!   i appreciate that jeanne keeps the prices of her classes low in general, and sometimes has super good deals on them.

in danielle's class i learned a lot about highlights and shadows, which is a subject i'm endlessly  fascinated by.   and danielle's a watercolor and pencil girl too - you know i love that!     i painted this 'danielle girl' in class...  (i'll pretend that the bottom line of her cape  really does make my eyes smile ; )   not only did i learn a lot, it was a lot of *fun* to paint and draw in a different way.

i painted this yesterday, sitting outside.  i've hardly been out wandering at all - the ground is really muddy and it's been cold, but yesterday it was 30 degrees, which is warm enough to walk, and, if you find a sunny spot, warm enough to paint.   since i couldn't think of anything to paint i just put color down; i kept painting and repainting until the sun went behind the trees.  it felt so great to be painting outside again...  and yeah, i *do* keep a tube of white gouache in my daypack!

if you've made it this far, you have true stamina, ha!   thank you for your kindness, your comments, and your support in the past year...   and for all of the cool tips and great products that you've shared with me.  may 2015 be a happy one for you all!

  1. Hi Lynne and a happy new year to you too! As always I love your faces and seeing your books. I love wax over paintings. It gives such a lovely appearance, like something old and mysterious. I like the leaf girls. You could paint some on leaves when you are out. Hope you are ok. Painting and drawing always helps me too when I am feeling a bit down. As does doing anything creative I suppose. I haven't done much recently though I have started a new year journal-in a reclaimed book-'The Bridge Over San Luis Rey which had a nice coloured cover and I had two copies of! I have gessoed all the pages either black or white as the paper is pretty thin.

  3. What a great post Lynne! Oh my goodness, your sketchbooks are magical! Thank you for the tips on the classes. They sound really good. You are so knowledgeable about materials, I am betting you could teach classes too. But I know you would rather just sit in the sun and paint peacefully. :)

    PS: Your teapot is exquisite!

  14. I slowly savoured each of your lovely paintings Lynne! I love your sensitive handling of paint, it's so inspiring. I tend to have too much of a rushed and heavy hand and use far too much paint! Thankyou for your kind words on my new year resolutions drawings, they're the first ones I've done for weeks and it feels like I've forgotten how to draw. ;)

  21. do you even suspect how i look forward to your posts? they are a highlight in my life, every time! i love that you explain what materials you used to create each piece. You are so versatile. encaustics evade me; i have used that little iron to no avail. but above all, i love the things you choose to paint. thank you.

  24. Your work is such a delight! and this post went on and on with such beauty as I scrolled down. I looked slowly to savour and enjoy each creation - and now I need to go back and look again after I comment, because I can't get enough of it. I love your faces, the plants, the shoes - oh I love it all. I love seeing all the different mediums you use - the beeswax adds such beautiful depth! (love it!) and thanks for sharing the links to classes - need to check that out! Thanks also for your comment on my blog, knowing your like my creations makes me smile all over! Enjoy the sun!

  25. Your art makes me so happy - I have kept this post at the end of my feed as a treat for when I had a few minutes to look more closely at it and what a delightful time I had. I'm curious about how you keep your papers from curling when you watercolor in a pocket moleskine - is it a special moleskine or just the normal brown covered one??

  26. Hey Lynne, I took Danielle's class when it was live back in the fall. I was frustrated with myself that I was so busy I hardly paid attention to it. I have been reviewing it this last month. I have also signed up for her storybook class which starts March 14th. Are you taking that one? I also appreciate the lower prices Jeanne offers.
Love the house on stilts and your tiny faces. Makes me want to work tiny. ALWAYS enjoy your blog and to see what you are up to. Cheers-Darlene

  27. Hiya Lynne....like Darlene I also took Danielle's classes last year ...but, didn't pay enough attention.....and,unlike her I have been looking in vain for how I can see our info again...or if we can do that. Maybe she wrote things down...I didn't ....sigh..... just like me ..procrastination will be the death of me....
Do you know how I could access the video on the little houses on stilts again? ... I have written to Danielle...perhaps she will answer me ....

    love your stuff....
