'lady eve' ~ albrecht durer watercolor pencils and gouache in 4" x 6" s. & b. 'gamma'

last week i got the book 'the drawings of the electric pencil' after sighing over it for months.  all of the sudden amazon lowered the price to $41.97, which was all i needed.  there is so much that i could say about this book but i'm not feeling very wordy, so i'll just say that it moves me to my very core.  'lady eve' was inspired by one of the faces in the book, and there are many...

you can see all of the images in the book at the electric pencil website.   they were drawn by a man named edward deeds who lived most of his life in 'state lunatic asylum  #3' in nevada, missouri.  there's a great video about edward on the website,  sharing what little is known about his life.

she was 'lady evangeline' before i realized that that was not going to fit on the page. ; )

if i'm not here, i'm out walking...

  2. Oh Lynne, what treasures you have shared with us today. THANKYOU. I was so moved by this mans story, and his piognant drawings. I will be back to view the video again and again. So much loving detail in his pictures, they are both beautiful and heartbreaking. The lichen landcape you have photoraphed, is beautiful. Thankyou again for your wonderful blog. Hope you have been resting your wrist. Hugs to you, Marg. ox

  5. OMG what a story. The video made me cry. It certainly shows that the desire to make work transcends everything. And his work shows that even tho he was a 'prankster' he was a gentle man. I am very moved.
No wonder you love the book.

  8. What treasures, Lynne.

I love your Lady Eve. She looks so peaceful as she seems to gaze at the magnificent trees (and your sweet little acorn!) on the opposite page.

And Edward Deeds! I was so moved by his work and the video of his life. It stirred up so many emotions in me. . .

Thank you for sharing this with us.

    Happy walking!

  9. Lynne! I don't know if you have noticed or not, but you are almost to 500 followers! But knowing your kind heart, I know this probably does not matter to you. Let me tell you though that I am so crazy about your art that I would click the join to make it change over to 500, but I can't because I am already on there. : )

I love Eve...she has a baby soft round face and just seems to be so kind and sweet.

I am off to check out this book you are raving about. Enjoy your walks.

    xoxo

  10. I just took a peek...awesome book! I love that a young boy rescued it from the trash in 1970. Awesome drawings. I often wonder what the connection is for some artists and "lunaticism"...Van Gogh...Edvard Munch...???? I wonder if someone has written a book on the subject.

the video takes me right into the heart of another.
the desire to create central to our very core, and the language of it sweeps me away!

  15. Lynne, before I even go to the link I have the beginning of a tear...because of the idea of the lunatic asylums. The ones that were prevalent in the earlier to late-mid century last. We have a huge one [that is supposedly haunted and I hope that it is] in the burbs that is now all housing-development. The asylums just were so huge hey? Big buildings; big administrations; big blockbuster movies made about them or with them in there somewhere; psychic haunted investigations going on in more recent times; photo shoots galore. It is just really something else. Okay now I'm going to your link. *smiles* Norma
p.s. I love your drawing. Love it. I'm going to hunt for more pine cones today. Yesterday they were everywhere but I didn't have a bag to carry them. I collect them for the seeds to use in my art pieces.

  17. the Pencil guy broke my heart this morning. what a story he was telling with his hand made book; and what a story the video tells of our society; of art. Such vision.

he could've lived in his cabin by the river, lived off the land.

    those eyes...

  18. wow... what a story. The book looks amazing and your inspired drawing is wonderful. This story really really shows the importance of art. How this person found art in his life and thank goodness his work was found. Amazing!

  25. well i just don't know how i missed this post - again. i was out in the garden pulling weeds. i'm doing foraging too so not all weeds are pulled! love the moss heart - it you wet them will they turn green? it's been hard working outside with all the rain. now about the young miss that how fine and royal is she. such a delicate touch. i love the plait too. a dear maiden of the woods with her leaf-feather crown and her magic garden gown...she has a little of the new and old touch: the symmetry of the non-dominate hand. my mother use to braid my hair and at the end since my hair was so thin she'd braid in a ribbon to tie off the ends. ride happily in your forest my dear, "lady eve." xox ani

  28. Ah, this artist you speak of has a soul like that of Darger, and Adolf Wolfli...

The asylum, along with outsider artist badge fascinates me. As once I broke into an old abandon debunked asylum and found the remain of peoples lives ... but that's another story...
